I have received so many messages from beautiful ladies asking me tips on how to reduce hair fall. I was surprised to find that most of us are in the same boat. Fighting hair fall, struggling to grow hair and finding it almost impossible to increase the volume of the hair.
What I have learned from my experience is finding the reason for your hair loss will nearly solve your problem. But finding it is the hardest thing.
Here are some reasons I have noticed why my hair fall-
1. Chlorinated water– Chlorine is the biggest enemy of hair. Apart from hair fall it also makes your hair dry and frizzy. If you are suffering from hair fall after moving to a new place then the reason could be mostly because of water.
I recommend either using Chlorine shower filter or washing your hair with store-bought filtered water. The later trick REALLY works. I refill my 5-gallon bottles from Safeway or Wholefoods and use that to wash my hair. I have seen a lot of difference in my hair when I did that. My hair wasn’t that frizzy and hair loss was minimal.
2. Stress- Stress is the reason for many health problems, reducing it is not the easiest thing. Try meditating and workout regularly to relieve stress.
3. Not washing hair on a regular basis– We all have times when you get lazy or too busy to wash your hair. Every time I leave my hair uncleaned for more than 4 days, I see an increased amount of hair fall in the shower. The trick I use to keep myself in check is to apply oil to the scalp at so the next morning I have to wash my hair.
4. Shampoo- This is pretty obvious. Not all shampoos work for every hair. Don’t settle until you find the one that suits your hair and has no harmful chemicals especially sulfates. I am currently using this Ayurvedic shampoo and loving it.
Other possible reasons for hair fall-
- Thyroid Issues
- Iodine deficiency
- Poor Diet– Eat food rich in biotin like eggs, avocado, almonds, whole wheat, etc., rich in iron-rich protein like leafy green vegetables, tofu, legumes, lentils, etc. Foods that are rich in Vitamin A like bell peppers, Vitamin C like citrus fruits, and Zinc like spinach.
Apart from water quality and hair products, essential oils help me maintain healthy hair and scalp also stimulating hair growth.
Top Essential Oils for Hair Growth
There are many essential oils that can be useful for hair growth. Following are the ones I use the most
Rosemary Oil– The best oil for hair growth. You will find this oil in all the blends I am sharing today. Rosemary increases blood flow to the hair follicles hence stimulating faster and healthier hair growth. Rosemary also prevents excess oiliness in the scalp, promoting a clean and healthy scalp that fosters the formation of new hair. It also said to reduce dandruff.
Apart from the wonderful benefits, rosemary smells divine. It’s definitely one of the best smelling essential oils.
Peppermint Oil- You will love the pleasant soothing feeling it gives when applied to the scalp. This sensation is said to stimulate and invigorate the hair follicles, thereby promoting hair growth.
Cedarwood Oil- Cedarwood is another amazing oil that is well-known for promoting hair growth. Like Rosemary, it nourishes the scalp by improving the blood flow. Another amazing quality cedarwood has just like rosemary and peppermint is awakening dormant phase follicles. About 10% of the hair on your head is in a dormant phase.
The dormant phase lasts for 2 to 6 months and when the phase ends, the hair is dead and a new hair emerges. Due to the unhealthy maintenance of hair like poor nutrition, excess heat will increase this dormant phase and hair follicles gradually shrink. This will make hair follicles thinner and shorter as the hair follicles get weaker and they eventually fall causing hair fall.
Chamomile Oil- Chamomile oil is very effective in preventing dandruff and soothing an itching scalp.
DIY Essential Oil Blends
Before we get into the actual recipe. Here are some tips-
You can use any Carrier oil or a combination of carrier oils instead of using just Coconut oil.
Carrier Oils- Jojoba oil, Argan oil, Almond oil, Castor oil (note: castor oil is very thick and getting it off from hair is really hard).
I follow 2% dilution (the process of diluting essential oils with carrier/base oils).
1 cup/16 tbsp/236 ml of base oil= 48 drops of essential oil
The level of composition of these blends is in increasing order. If you are not sure how your hair is going to react to these oils. Start off with blend# 1 with only one essential oil and slowly increase the number of oils.

you are so right and I can relate so much on what you say! I’ve always had long )very long) hair and taking care of them can be so hard. Not washing too often with an aggressive shampoo and change it every now and then is all I’ve been doing up to now. But now I’ll try your tips and I’m sure they’ll be fine for me
Oooh, I’ve been struggling with hair growth for the past year and these are some great tips I will put into practice right away! I just need to get myself the rosemary oil 🙂 thanks so much for sharing!
I have a real issue with hair loss at the minute, ever since I had my 5th baby it has been falling out by the handful! I so need to try this!
My hair grows relatively fast, but I’m always hopeful it’ll grow faster. I have rosemary and essential oil, so I’ll have to try out your recipes and use them for hair growth.
So many recipes, thank you. Do you think these would stimulate eyebrow hair growth?
Thank you so much for these recommendations. I noticed I was experiencing hair loss about a year ago (I’m 24 years old). And I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 8 years ago, so I guess it (or the medication for it) is finally taking its toll. Will definitely try some of these oils. So glad I came across this post.
This is great! My hair falls off everywhere like crazy. I suspect the hard water here is a major factor as well as stress. But i definitely need to check out those oils.
Oh I love this post! Just happen I have some leftover coconut oil and rosemary oil to use! Do u think I can also add those to my shampoo will it works too?
Never knew that oils could do wonders on our hair! I know lots of people who problems with extreme hairfall! Going to share this article to some of my friends!

Great post Surekha! My hairfall has increased over the last few months so God knows I need this…I’ll be back with reviews 🙂
I’ve heard so many great things about essential oils! I think I need to give them a try soon!
I’m always a little skeptical of products that suggest they will promote hair growth or minimize hair loss. But I could try these formulas, as essential oils aren’t that expensive – so worth an investment x
My hair fall has increased after falling sick last month and this is something I would love to try.
If there is someone who has a problem with her hair, then that can be me. I cut it and plait it now and then.It obviously falls because of shampoo, I haven’t gotten the right one yet that I have never been a fan of keeping it so long though I admire ladies with long and healthy locks. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations and the DIY steps. I’ve heard of rosemary oil before, bet I’ll try that out when I’m tired of keeping it short.
Hair fall is very traumatic and if it happens because of stress then its even more difficult to control. Because hair fall leads to more stress which leads to more hair fall, the vicious circle looping infinitely !! Essential oils is something that I have tried and it works but one important thing is to be patient enough to see the results. Most people give up before that!!
When I first moved to Dubai I was astounded at the amount hair I was losing… I would find handfuls on my pillow when I woke up in the morning or when washing my hair. I finally discovered that I wasn’t the only one who had suffered hair fall because of the desalinated water. I use various hair fall shampoos and this helps minimize the effects most of the time.
I knew about rosemary, but not the rest. The last thing I want is to lose hair!
This is so helpful thank you! I learned so much about these natural products
The insane uses of essential oils always amaze me and your post really shows this! They are amazing for hair growth!
Pregnancy has not been kind to my hair, and I really need help in this area. I’m loving blend 1 – think I might give it a try.
I never thought of using essential oils to make my hair grow & I have so many! I also have very thin hair, so I will give this a go. Thank you so much!
Such great post. Particularly because I know I need to do a better job with treating my hair… especially in this Chicago weather. Great post.
I never thought about using essential oils for my hair! Duh! I need to check and see if I have any of the ones you listed! My hair is very dry and frizzy and falls out all over the place!
Stress is a big one for me. It effects everything, especially hair loss. I’ve also heard women say that their hair has thinned a lot as they’ve gotten older. So glad you mentioned essential oils. I love peppermint, but have never tried it for my hair. Very cool to know!
Ooh the Chamomile Oil one I will be checking out for sure, I always find my scalp a little itchy which then leads to dandruff. I had never thought to use essential oils on my hair before so I really enjoyed this post. 🙂
I lose so many hair it’s crazy! And I am not even stressed! My hair is so sensitive and fragile! This would really help I am sure!
Wow! It sounds quite interesting. I have never heard about essential oil blends for hair growth and for reducing hair fall. This is really helpful. Will check this out.
I got pretty bad hair loss after delivering both my children. I guess not washing your hair often improves the health of the follicles. What really helped my hair stop falling and completely recover has been Quinine, also a natural plant.
I suffer with hair shedding as well. I have never heard of this essential oils used for increasing hair health. Do you know if this can be used on all hair types, ethnicities?
This is such an interesting post to read. Good to know about blends of essential oils for hair growth and reducing hair fall. I will check into this.
