Indo-Western Diwali Outfit with a Pink Tulle Maxi Skirt

Diwali is one of my favorite festivals that summons fond childhood memories. I like everything about the festival- decorating the entire house with lights, doing fireworks with my brother, wearing a new dress, doing puja (worship) with my parents, eating yummy food, and distributing sweets to everyone we know. There is something magical about the festival that makes me wait for it every year.
Why Diwali is Celebrated
There are several myths associated with celebrating Diwali but the most well-known of them is from the Hindu epic, Ramayana. In Short, Rama, a warrior hero, and next line to be the king of Ayodhya has been forced into exile, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. One day, Sita was abducted by Ravana, an evil king. After a fierce battle, Rama defeats Ravana. Reunited with Sita, Rama returns to Ayodhya after 14 years of absence on a new moon day (the darkest night). Villagers lite their path home with earthen lamps (diyas) and celebrated the homecoming by bursting fireworks. Hence the tradition of lighting lamps on Diwali became prevalent
In southern parts of India (where I grew up), People celebrate the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Narakasura. Hence, people in South India light lamps (diyas) and burst firecrackers to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness
Diwali or in general any Indian festival is also famous for colorful and grand outfits. It is the time when everyone loves to dress up at their best. I usually prefer wearing all traditional for festivals but today I am here with a fusion outfit I put together with the western pieces that are still available online.
I love tulle skirts, the whimsical and chic vibes just scream my style. When I saw this pink tulle maxi skirt on the Asos website. I knew I had to give an Indian touch to it. The richness of the color sets the festive mood.
The embroidery, color, and traditional cut of the Zara top are all you need to glam up your holiday outfit. I purposely opted for both bold colors to create a contrast. Plus, my rule of them for festive wear is the brighter your outfit is, more the merrier.
Tips for Indian Fusion Festive Wear
1. Accessorize– Festive fusion would be incomplete without some bling. Opt for statement jewelry pieces like heavy earrings, modern chokers, and layered necklaces, or add traditional jewelry like bangles, Bindhi, maang tika, anklets, and armlets. For this look, you can either go simple with your outfit like I did in my first Diwali outfit or go full-on with bling. After all, festivals are for dressing up.
2. Bright Colors- As mentioned above, bold and contrasting colors are key to Indian festive wear. Opt for Western pieces in rich colors as I did in this outfit.
3. Ethnic Prints- Choose one of your clothing items in an Indian print such as wearing your old Lehenga with a crop top or your Kurthi (Tunic) with Jeans or Palazzo pants. In short, mix a traditional piece with a Western piece.
