Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also brings many changes to your body, especially around your belly as it stretches to accommodate your growing baby. During my first pregnancy, I struggled with extreme itchiness and dryness in my belly, and no store-bought cream or oil provided lasting relief. Frustrated, I created my belly oil, which kept my skin hydrated and nourished with just one or two applications throughout the day. In my second pregnancy, I’ve been using this oil from the beginning, and I’m happy to report that I haven’t experienced any itchiness so far!

The DIY belly oil recipe doesn’t include essential oils, so you don’t have to worry about potential irritation or safety concerns during pregnancy. It consists solely of carrier oils, making it gentle and suitable for your changing skin. Whether you’re pregnant or not, this oil makes an excellent everyday body moisturizer. I currently use it as my go-to moisturizer and plan to continue even after pregnancy.

Importance of Each Oil

1. Avocado Oil
  • Rich in Nutrients: Avocado oil is packed with vitamins A, D, and E, which are essential for skin health. It helps in deep penetration, nourishing the skin from within.
  • Moisturizing Properties: This oil has excellent emollient properties, making it great for preventing dryness and keeping the skin soft and supple.
2. Evening Primrose Oil
  • High in Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA): GLA is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe and calm irritated skin.
  • Supports Skin Elasticity: This oil is believed to improve skin elasticity, which can be particularly beneficial during pregnancy as your skin stretches.
3. Jojoba Oil
  • Similar to Skin’s Natural Oils: Jojoba oil closely resembles the sebum produced by our skin, making it an excellent moisturizer. It helps balance oil production and keeps the skin hydrated without clogging pores.
  • Rich in Antioxidants: It contains antioxidants that can help protect the skin from damage and improve its overall appearance.
4. Rosehip Oil
  • Packed with Vitamins and Essential Fatty Acids: Rosehip oil is known for its ability to improve skin tone, reduce scars, and fight signs of aging. It’s particularly beneficial for stretch marks and uneven skin tone.
  • Promotes Skin Regeneration: The oil promotes cellular regeneration, helping to maintain youthful and healthy skin.
5. Almond Oil
  • Nourishing and Soothing: Almond oil is gentle and rich in vitamins E and K. It provides deep hydration and can help soothe irritation and inflammation.
  • Helps Improve Skin Tone: Regular use can contribute to a more even skin tone and may help in reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

Carrier Oil Blend

Before we get into the actual recipe. Here are some tips-

The carrier oils used in this recipe—almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, rosehip oil, and evening primrose oil—are all safe for pregnancy and beyond. For the best results, I recommend using all the oils listed. I’ve provided two different measurements: a smaller batch (for a 4 oz bottle) and a larger batch (for a 16 oz bottle). You can start with the small batch to see how you like it before making a bigger one.

This recipe doesn’t include any essential oils to keep it safe for pregnancy. However, if you’re using it as a body moisturizer post-pregnancy after you’ve stopped breastfeeding, you can add essential oils for fragrance and extra benefits. I personally love geranium oil for its beautiful rose-like scent.

I follow 2% dilution (the process of diluting essential oils with carrier/base oils).

1 cup/16 tbsp/236 ml of base oil= 48 drops of essential oil

Does this Oil Prevent Stretch Marks

Yes, if used regularly, this oil can help keep your skin hydrated and nourished, potentially reducing the appearance of stretch marks. However, stretch marks can also be influenced by genetics, so results may vary.

  • Use a funnel to carefully pour each oil into a dark amber glass bottle. Once all the oils are added, close the lid tightly and shake the bottle to mix everything well. The dark amber color helps protect the oils from harmful UV light, extending their shelf life. harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, and extend the shelf life of the oils.
  • Apply a small amount of oil to your belly and gently massage in circular motions, ideally twice a day. I use it as an all-over body as a body moisturizer post shower
