In today’s blog post, we’ll explore creative ideas for Little Krishna outfit ideas for Janmashtami celebrations in the USA and discuss the importance of this festive occasion.
Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna.
According to Hindu mythology, Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura at midnight on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (August-September). His birth took place in a prison, where his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, were held captive by the evil king Kansa, who was Devaki’s brother. Krishna’s birth was predicted to end Kansa’s reign of terror, which made the event especially significant.
Janmashtami is a festival that celebrates not only the birth of lord Krishna but also the triumph of good over evil and the joy of childhood. Lord Krishna is often depicted as a playful child known for his mischievous antics, and the stories from his childhood are full of lessons in righteousness and virtue.
Little Krishna Outfits
On Janmashtami, Boys are often dressed as Krishna, while girls are usually dressed as Radha, Krishna’s beloved. Boys wear traditional attire with a dhoti, a peacock feather crown, and a flute, while girls adorn vibrant lehengas with floral garlands and traditional jewelry. This tradition adds fun to the festivities and helps children connect with their culture and create cherished memories along the way.
Every year, I love dressing V as little Krishna; it brings me immense joy, and he enjoys it too. However, I have to admit that it requires a lot of patience from parents. This year, it took us over three hours to dress my three-year-old. Maybe it will get easier as he grows up—or maybe not!
Finding traditional Indian outfits in the USA can sometimes be a challenge, but there are a few online stores and local boutiques that offer a good selection. Here are some of my go-to places:
- Online Stores: Websites like Etsy, Amazon, and Indian clothing stores like Little Muffet, Aza Fashion, and Tiber Taber that ship to the USA offer a variety of Krishna outfits for kids. Please see below for some outfit options towards the end of the post.
- Local Indian Boutiques: If you’re lucky to have an Indian community nearby, check out local Indian boutiques. They often carry festive outfits, especially around major festivals.
- DIY Options: For those who enjoy a bit of creativity, you can put together a Krishna outfit using a simple dhoti and accessories you already have. This is what I do every year, I have a post on this, check it here.
DIY Little Krishna Outfit
I dressed V in the dhoti he already owned from Ramrajcotton and accessorized it with my jewelry.
For the Mukut/ crown, we used the Kanduva/scarf that came with the dhoti set, pinned it with a fancy saree pin, and added a peacock feather to complete the look (peacock hair clip)
The pearl Mala that you have seen previously in this post is from Shinediamonds. It’s a 4-string fresh water pearl mala with a 6-7 mm size oval pearl.
I used a different pearl necklace as a stomach belt. I don’t remember the brand name.
The short 925 silver necklace from Potpourristudio
I used my earn chain as Armbands. I used a string to secure it in place.
I used the multi-color sindoor kit for the Tilakam
Flute from this toddler musical instrument set
