I wore this beautiful Kalamkari Saree With Ikat Patola Pallu for Sankranthi yesterday. I’d never seen a Kalamkari saree with a black zari border before, so it was love at first sight. For a first Kalamkari saree, it was indeed a bold choice. But this won’t be my last; I want one with a blue, red, and green zari border :D.
Unlike other festivals, wherein the color black is considered inauspicious, black is worn primarily on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. It is the day when the sun starts its northern movement. Hence this day marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Being the last day of winter, this day turns out to be the coolest day of the entire season.
Black, as a color, absorbs heat in contrast to other colors. Therefore, it is chosen on Makar Sankranthi to stay warm.
