One of the questions I got frequently asked on IG in the last couple of months was “what are the best shorts to wear under dresses?” While I love wearing my SPANX shapewear that is smoothing and comfortable but it’s not always ideal especially when you are headed out for a big meal :).
Also, these SPANX are mid-thigh so won’t be ideal for mini dresses plus they are pricey if you are just looking for some coverage. I decided to wear my journalist coat and dive headfirst into the internet and research nearly a dozen options.
My requirement was simple- comfortable, doesn’t need to be slimming, doesn’t roll up or down (there is nothing worse than having to adjust your shorts every time you go from sitting to standing), and is affordable preferably under $25.
The Best Shorts to wear Under dresses
1. Jockey Shortie
In short, these are short underwear to wear under dresses and skirts so you feel covered. They are not shapewear so don’t expect it to do any smoothing. So, won’t recommend wearing underneath body-hugging dresses as they would 100% show lines.

2. Jockey Wicking Mid-Thigh Short
These are mid-waisted and offer slight smoothing and are very comfortable. They do not roll at all at the waist or on the legs. If it does, it might be because you got a smaller size. Follow the size chart and get your correct size. The mid-length is perfect to wear under midi dresses and skirts.

3. Spanx mid-thigh Shapewear
My favorite shapewear shorts to wear under dresses and skirts. They offer excellent firming and smoothing without being too tight. I know the price is a little steep but it’s worth the investment. The fabric is very comfortable and durable. I wear this a ton especially now to smooth out my postpartum belly and it does a decent job and boosts my confidence. Sometimes confidence comes in the form of shapewear 😀
