Your Ultimate Guide to What to Wear to A Maternity Shoot by Top US Mom Blogger Dreaming Loud

Pregnancy is one of the most magical and transformative phases of life, and a maternity photoshoot is the perfect way to capture these fleeting moments and cherish them forever. For me, dressing up during pregnancy has been a wonderful way to embrace my changing body and celebrate this unique journey. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling good, and staying connected to my sense of self. Choosing outfits that make me feel confident and radiant has been helping me prepare mentally and emotionally for the postpartum journey ahead.

In today’s blog post, I’m excited to share a guide on what to wear to a maternity shoot, with tips on flattering styles, seasonal outfits, and family coordination to capture stunning memories. Let’s dive in!

1. Picking the Theme and Location

The theme and location of your maternity shoot play a big role in your outfit choice.

When I mention “theme,” I mean deciding what kind of pictures you envision. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Traditional Shoot– A traditional shoot is a beautiful way to celebrate and honor your culture and tradition. Whether it’s draping a saree, wearing a family heirloom, or choosing colors and accessories that hold special significance, a traditional shoot allows you to create timeless memories while celebrating the traditions that shape you and your growing family. This can be an indoor shoot or an outdoor shoot. In the above picture, I re-wore a saree that I wore to my brother’s wedding 12 years back.
  • At-home Candid Lifestyle shoot- We recently did a lifestyle shoot, and I am eagerly waiting for the pictures. The idea was to capture candid moments at home, doing the things we love to do as a family. It’s a beautiful way to preserve cherished memories with your firstborn before welcoming a new baby into your home and life. Choose monochrome outfits in white or black, or select colors that complement the aesthetic of your home for a cohesive look.
  • Studio Photoshoot – A vintage or minimalist backdrop sets the perfect tone for your shoot, offering a blank canvas to highlight bold jewel tones, monochromatic outfits, or luxurious fabrics like satin and velvet.

2. Tips on Choosing the right Fabric

The fabric of your dress plays a significant role in how you look and feel. Here are a few of the best fabrics for maternity outfits:

  • Jersey or stretch-knit fabrics– Ideal for fitted maternity dresses that hug your curves and highlight your bump. These fabrics are soft, stretchy, and comfortable, allowing you to move freely during the shoot.
    • Best For: Studio shoots or casual, intimate settings.
  • Chiffon: Light and Airy Elegance– Chiffon is a popular choice for maternity shoot dresses because it’s lightweight, airy, and breathable. It provides a flowy and romantic look.
    • Best For: Outdoor shoots in gardens, beaches, or open fields.
  • Tulle: Whimsical and Dramatic– Tulle adds a dreamy, fairytale vibe to your maternity photos. This versatile fabric is also perfect for baby showers, adding an elegant and whimsical touch to your celebration.
    • Best For: Studio or outdoor shoots with a whimsical or princess theme.
  • Satin or Silk: Sleek and Luxurious– For a polished, high-fashion look, satin or silk fabrics are excellent choices. They add shine and elegance, giving your photos a regal, editorial quality. I especially love maternity shoots in silk sarees.
    • Best For: Indoor or studio shoots with dramatic lighting.

3. Finding the Dress That Flatters Your Body Type

For my body shape, I find that fitted styles are more flattering than boxy pieces. As an Apple shape with a smaller torso and longer legs, I particularly love empire waistline dresses. The bodice hugs the torso, drawing attention to the waist, while the skirt gently flares out, creating a balanced and graceful silhouette.

  • Hourglass Shape: A-line or wrap dresses are perfect for accentuating curves, highlighting the waist, and creating an elegant, balanced look
  • Pear Shape: Dresses with an empire waist or A-line cuts help to balance out wider hips while drawing attention to the upper body
  • Rectangle Shape: Opt for dresses with a cinched waist or those that create curves, like peplum styles or dresses with ruffles, to add volume and shape.
  • Inverted Triangle: Look for dresses with a flared skirt or A-line cuts to balance a broader shoulder or bust while creating a softer, feminine silhouette.

4. Don’t Feel the pressure to Follow Trends

With so many dreamy maternity shoot ideas online, it’s easy to feel the pressure to follow trends. However, your maternity shoot should reflect your unique style and comfort. During my first pregnancy, I didn’t have a maternity shoot or dress up much, partly due to COVID and other circumstances. This time, I fully embraced the opportunity to dress up, step out, and capture special moments. I especially loved wearing traditional Indian attire, whether it was a saree or a simple churidar. I simply wore what felt right for me and made the most of those precious moments by capturing them.

5. Pick Necklines That Draw Attention to Your Bump

The neckline of your maternity shoot dress is key to framing your face and enhancing your overall look. Opt for open necklines like V-neck, sweetheart, scoop, and off-the-shoulder styles—they’re not only flattering but also draw attention to your baby bump, creating a beautiful, balanced silhouette.

6. Consider Seasonal Colors and Prints

When planning an outdoor maternity shoot, choose colors and prints that complement the natural backdrop for beautifully cohesive photos. Don’t feel pressured to wear a specific color based on your baby’s gender—there are no strict rules for what to wear. Focus on what makes you feel confident and aligns with your personal style.

For Spring, choose light, breathable fabrics in soft pastel tones. A flowing maxi dress in shades like powder blue or blush pink is an excellent choice for a spring photoshoot. This time of year symbolizes fresh beginnings, so feel free to explore florals, ruffles, and intricate lace for a touch of charm. Accessorize with delicate pearls for an elegant touch.

For summer, choose sundresses in bright and cheerful colors like yellow, orange, and pink. Choose light fabrics such as cotton or linen to stay cool. For a pop of color, complete the look with a statement necklace or a vibrant headband.

For Fall, embrace the season’s warm and rich tones with a dress in deep burgundy, mustard, or forest green. Choose a long-sleeve midi or maxi dress in a lightweight fabric (like the one I am wearing above) that flatters while keeping you comfortable. Don’t shy away from floral prints in cozy autumn hues. Add texture with a cozy cardigan, scarf, or even a dress featuring stylish puffed sleeves for a creative touch.

Or, choose outfits that complement the season’s colors to enhance the overall feel of your photos. This helps in creating a cohesive, visually appealing set of images that highlights the bond between your family.
