How to Keep School Lunch Warm for Lunchtime And Best Lunch Boxes for School
V’s teacher shared this trick of sending food in an insulated food container a few weeks ago, and it completely transformed how and what I packed for V’s lunch. Now, I can pack food that tastes great when warm, like mac and cheese or rice with curry or chicken nuggets.

The video above showcases how I pack hot school lunches that stay warm until lunchtime, and here is a step-by-step breakdown of the same.
- Take an insulated food container like this one. Pour some hot water into it, and make sure to close the lid tightly. Now, give it a few minutes. Let that magic happen as the container warms up.
- Empty out the water, and use a cloth to wipe it dry. This step is crucial to keep any excess moisture out.
- Put your warm, delicious food inside, seal it up again, and keep that heat locked in.
- Now, it’s time to pack the lunch into an insulated lunch bag. And just like that, you’ve got a hot school lunch that will stay warm until lunchtime. Enjoy!
Note – Please inform the teacher not to refrigerate the food container but to keep it outside until lunchtime.
In V’s classroom, they serve food on plates, so this method works perfectly for us. For older kids, you can either pack a plate separately or let them eat directly from the container. This trick also works for office lunches and when you are traveling!
When I pack the lunch in the insulated food container, I use these steel boxes to pack the sides like fruits, cheese, or snacks.
On days when I pack a peanut butter sandwich or something that doesn’t need to be heated in this small stainless steel bento box, which is just the right size for my 2-year-old.
For the snack box, you can either opt for this quad stainless steel snack box or get a small steel box and use silicon cup liners to make your compartments.
Below, I have linked more insulated food containers and lunch boxes for school-

For older kids, The Omiebox bento box will be a great option; it comes with an in-built insulated container, but for a 2/3-year-old, it’s a little big. It’s the same with the Bentgo stainless steel lunchbox. It’s slightly big for younger kids but a great option for a 3/4-year-old. Each section is sealed so the food stays in place.
The small stainless steel or silicon containers also come in handy for carrying snacks during school pickup or traveling.
